Malaysia's No. 1

The hat has Tun No.1 painted on it. The tie has 3 state emblems of Sarawak and name tag reads:No. 1, Malaysia (red). Tun Datuk Patinggi Lau Siew Hung (white)

He calls himself Malaysia's No. 1, Tun Datuk Patinggi Lau Siew Hung. Nobody has ever bestowed upon him those awards except his parents named him Lau Siew Hung. This strange and funny man is from Sarikei Division of Sarawak. Apparently every body in this small town at the lower Rajang knows him because he has been an evergreen figure for many decades.Politicians come and go, but No. 1 stays. I spotted No. 1 last Saturday afternoon near the Sarikei bus station while he was crossing the road. He was aware of me taking his photos and that didn't bother him a single bit. Look at how cool he was...he could most probably be a popular movie star if he was in Hong Kong.I heard many years ago that Mr. Lau was a loyal supporter of Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) and he was a good friend of Tan Sri Datuk Lau Hieng Ding who was MP for Sarikei and former Malaysia's Minister of Science and Technology. One day the Minister exaggeratedly praised Mr. Lau for being very good and capable and told him:" You are No. 1" That's how he got the title, so it was rumoured.I have no idea how he got the Tun and Datuk Patinggi titles. Hope that this post would not land him in trouble with the royal families or the government.

He looks like a cool man with that cool look that past his age. Are you sure he's not senile or whatever?

I'm sure he has lots of stories to be shared.

BTW, I like the photo of the mosque. Nice. Didn't think about that angle.

nelson: By the way, do you personally know him? Thanks for dropping by.

mama:I think he will live long. He must be 70+ now and looks so healthy.

eiling:I just asked a politician friend who had coffee with him several times...my friend insisted that No. 1 is mentally sound and he could even tell your fortune.

hardy:Yes, I agree with you he would have lots to share. I like that angle too...must have spent more than an hour discovering that one fine monrning. Selamat Hari Raya to you and your family.

-eiling- said...

Oh really? So did you ask him about your fortune?

Philip said...

eiling: I have not met him face to face. Actually I don't quite believe the fortune telling kind of things...so most probably I won't ask about that. If I have a photo of yours, I will ask him to read your fortune.

Tat guy is my friend's uncle and also my dad's friend. who doesn't know him in sarikei? he's friendly, talks very loud and funny. he visits almost every shop in the town everyday and sometimes came out in the papers declaring his manifesto etc. I'm fr sarikei but now staying outstation to further my studies, so gonna miss him for quite some time.

Nelson: Thanks for your info. So is my story about how he got the No. 1 title correct? Perhaps you can tell us more about him.Wishing you all the best in your studies.

i need to ask my parents or uncles to inform me more. I'm not so sure how he gets the idea of no.1 maybe out of frustration. from what i know, he was cheated by some people telling him to go for election, spent a lot of his hard earned money (as a tailor) for functions, dinners etc and until election day, he lost, even his deposit. that was long time ago. he was used by somebody or some gangs. then he tried to enter election again while the other candidate was hoping for clean sweep therefore he was given 'money' not to stand for election. most of his relatives despised him but his wife and children are still supporting him. he is nice guy, used to borrow money from my dad(for the wife works in a timber camp and children outstation), just some 10 or 20 or the most rm50 to buy numbers or cigarettes or food or even to pay his bus fare and he will definitely pay you back on time(when his wife gives him money). that's the good thing unlike someone who borrows and disappear. Lau siu hung his name, very energetic when he talks.

Haha..no thanks.

Nelson: Thanks again for more info on No. 1.I did hear about his misadventure in the election, but never know that he was a tailor before. Will certainly meet him one day to find out more. When you have more information on him, please post here again.

eiling: haha, I know you won't want it. Better for us to believe in ourselves and work hard la.
