Maju Road--Before Rajang Esplanade Was Built

Before these rows of shophouses were built, this area was the Mission Road red light district where at least 100 prostitues dwelled in wooden houses built on stilts along the river bank. The majority of these girls were teenage Iban who came from their longhouses in the interior.

The land in front of the shophouses was reclaimed and it was transformed into a beautiful esplanade by the Sibu Municipal Council. A multi million dollar terminal for express passenger boats has also been built there. If you look closely, you will notice that the 7-storey pagoda was not built yet at the time this picture was taken.
