The Coconut Mystery
Hot days are here again. It has not rained for a few days and the scorching sun is making everyone so irritating, so boring and so sleepy especially at noon after lunch. I had two of these coconuts Sunday afternoon at one go. They were really refreshing and quenched my thirst. While having the coconuts, I recalled some elders advising me some years ago when I travelled to Irian Jaya that I should not drink the coconut there because they were contaminated and infested with the larvae of malaria or dengue mosquitoes. Could it be true? How can the mosquitoes lay eggs inside the hard shell of the coconut? And how could the larvae survive inside the supposedly air-tight shell? Can anyone enlighten me on these mysteries?
