The Meranti (genus Shorea) is perhaps the most common and popular timber in East Malaysia. People have been using it for decades specially in making door frame, solid door, flooring, wall, indoor furniture and plywood. There are more than 100 different species of Meranti, making it the most varied timber available in Sarawak and Sabah. The more well known Meranti species are the White Meranti (top picture) and the Red Meranti (bottom picture) In the international market, Japanese has the preference for White Meranti while Europe and Middle East more prefer Dark Red Meranti.
